A new novel by horror master Ramsey Campbell is always a cause for celebration. A new Lovecraftian novel from Ramsey is even more so in many fans opinion. Creatures of the Pool introduces us to Gavin Meadows, a tour guide in Liverpool whose father disappears after investigating local legends. When Gavin starts searching for him, he finds out much more about the local history than imaginable, making him question everyone around him.

Building his usual claustrophobic, paranoia – Campbell is firing on all cylinders with this one. He has a knack for making the ordinary seem sinister, the mundane seem exotic. He incorporates elements of Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos, local folklore and even Jack the Ripper into this book.

He’s long transcended Howard Phillips mythology by creating his own. Setting many of his tales in his own hometown, he’s built his own Providence. Once again with Creatures, Ramsey Campbell shows why he is continually one of the top horror writers year after year. It’s good to see him get a mass market paperback publication in the US again too.
